Critical Mass announces the inevitable and irresistible triumph of the bicycle and its kindred liberty devices. Cycling's splendid bountieswith ecology, in health, in sheer peace of mind-- will forever slice through the autocracy's obtuse information overload. Riding our bikes is grace, simplicity, autonomy. Critical Mass rolls out in smooth, reflexive response to all that is stupid and cruel about getting around. We do have the right-- at the very least, our taxes pay for (far too many) roads, not to mention the enormous subsidies afforded to gasoline. This city would prosper greatly with less cars. There are countless examples of just such a thing. The street is a public place; we take it to celebrate the possibilities. Antisocial elements might take it back tomorrow-- by force, with their shiny metal boxes-for the sake of a disgusting daily grind we all secretly despise. Given the deafening realities of climate destabilization and resource depletion, we wonder how long they will play the charade. In the meantime there is today... |
